Two such events held this Memorial Day were the 36th annual Memorial Day Service at Coral Ridge Funeral Home & Cemetery, and the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Southwest Florida Military Museum & Library.
This year’s ceremony at Coral Ridge included a helicopter flyover by Lee County Mosquito Control, a proclamation by Mayor Marni Sawicki, who also led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance, the reading of over 50 veterans who passed away over the past year and are interred at the cemetery, and words from guest speakers SFC Aaron Forum, Unites States Army- Retired, and U.S. Navy Veteran and Past State President of the Korean War Veterans Association, Bob Hebner.
At the military museum, the day began with a breakfast followed by an afternoon of ceremonies from local organizations and dignitaries.
The event began with a flag retirement ceremony by the Sea Cadets, followed by words from Veterans Foundation Founder and President Ralph Santillo, and Lee County Commissioners Brian Hamman and Cecil Pendergrass. This year’s keynote speaker was Congressman Francis Rooney, who made his way to the museum after attending ceremonies in Naples and Fort Myers. The day concluded with performances by the Hot Flashz and Guns & Hoses.
