Sake bottle – Iwo Jima

The command cave, reportedly dug by Korean forced laborers, included sleeping areas dug into the walls like single bunks and meeting rooms. A room near Kuribayashi’s personal sleeping area contained a sauna which was heated by volcanic hot water flowing under the room.
The sake bottle from Kuribayashi’s cave was a souvenir given to Ronald Kemper while he was senior defense department civilian in Japan and assigned to Yokata Air Base as the chief of the Defense Special Representative to Japan from 1990-93. He donated it to the museum in June 2014.
